history of the Bells
Bell ringing in Stowmarket has a fine pedigree, with over 250 peals known to have been rung on the bells (more than 5000 changes, or about 3 hours of ringing). The longest peal on the bells was rung in 1997 and lasted for 5 hours and 32 minutes. Sadly such a feat could not be repeated today owing to the state of the bells.
The tenor bell at Stowmarket weighs 20cwt – 0qr – 27lb, about the same as a smallish car like a Ford Fiesta. It’s amazing to think that something of such weight is swinging around at the top of the church tower to produce the glorious sound it does (tuned to D Major for those who have a musical ear).
